1.Coal tar epoxy coating

Description:

Coal tar epoxy coating is a high-performance protective coating that is commonly used for steel and concrete surfaces that are exposed to harsh environments, such as marine, industrial, and chemical facilities. It is most suitable for structures in submerged conditions.

The coal tar epoxy coating is a solvent-based, two-part system that is made up of coal tar, epoxy resin, and other additives. It is applied directly to the surface to be coated, and it provides excellent adhesion, corrosion protection, and chemical resistance. The coal tar component of the system provides excellent resistance to effluents, sewage, salt water, organic / inorganic acids, alkalis, and other corrosive substances, while the epoxy resin component provides toughness, durability, and flexibility.

Coal tar epoxy coating has a number of advantages, including:

  1. Excellent resistance to water, chemicals, and corrosive substances, making it ideal for use in harsh environments.
  2. High adhesion to steel and concrete surfaces, providing excellent protection against corrosion and other forms of damage.
  3. Durable and long-lasting, providing protection for many years with minimal maintenance.
  4. Versatile, with a wide range of applications in marine, industrial, and chemical environments.

However, coal tar epoxy coating can also have some disadvantages, such as:

  1. Hazardous material: Proper safety precautions must be taken during application and disposal.
  2. Long curing time: Coal tar epoxy coating has a relatively long curing time, which can delay the use of the coated surface.

Uses:

Coal tar epoxy coating is widely used in a variety of industrial and marine applications where protection against corrosion and chemical exposure is critical. Here are some common locations where coal tar epoxy coating can be used:

  1. Steel structures: Coal tar epoxy coating is commonly used on steel structures such as bridges, piers, and pipelines to protect against corrosion and damage from harsh weather and exposure to corrosive substances. Coating the surface of Sluice gates, Sluice gates etc.
  2. Concrete surfaces: Coal tar epoxy coating can be used on concrete surfaces, such as floors, walls, and tanks, to protect against chemical exposure and prevent concrete deterioration. Sewage & Effluent treatment plants (STP & ETP). Foundation protection from contaminated soil, backfill and water.
  3. Marine environments: Coal tar epoxy coating is often used on marine structures, such as docks, ships, and offshore platforms, to protect against saltwater corrosion and damage from marine organisms.
  4. Oil and gas industry: Coal tar epoxy coating is commonly used in the oil and gas industry to protect pipelines and other equipment from corrosion and chemical exposure.
  5. Wastewater treatment plants: Coal tar epoxy coating can be used in wastewater treatment plants to protect against chemical exposure and prevent corrosion of tanks and other equipment.
  6. Chemical plants: Coal tar epoxy coating is frequently used in chemical plants to protect against chemical exposure and prevent equipment damage and corrosion. Storage tanks in fertilizer, petrochemical industry, refineries etc.
  7. Underground steel pipelines
  8. Other industries: Molasses tanks in sugar industry, Industrial flooring in chloro-alkali plants. Thermal Power plants – Water intake & outlet channels, ash ponds, coal handling units etc.

Application instructions

  1. Surface preparation: The surface to be coated must be clean, dry, and free of any contaminants, such as dust, oil, grease, or loose debris. Any rust, scale, or other corrosion must be removed by abrasive blasting, grinding, or other suitable methods. Concrete surfaces must be properly prepared by etching or shot blasting to ensure adequate adhesion.
  2. Mixing: Coal tar epoxy coating is a two-part system that consists of a base and a hardener. The two components must be mixed thoroughly according to the manufacturer’s instructions, using a mechanical mixer or other suitable equipment. The mixing ratio may vary depending on the specific product, but a common ratio is 1 parts base to 1 part hardener by volume.
  3. Application: Coal tar epoxy coating can be applied using a brush, roller, or spray equipment. The coating should be applied in a thin, even layer, taking care to avoid any drips or runs.
  4. Drying time: Coal tar epoxy coating has a relatively long curing time, which can vary depending on factors such as temperature, humidity, and substrate porosity. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding drying times and recoat intervals to ensure that the coating is fully cured before applying subsequent layers or using the coated surface.
  5. Clean-up: Any tools or equipment used for applying coal tar epoxy coating should be cleaned with a suitable solvent immediately after use. The solvent should be disposed of properly, according to local regulations.

It is important to note that specific application instructions may vary depending on the particular product and the conditions of the application site. It is always recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure proper application and optimal performance. Additionally, it is important to use proper safety precautions during application, including the use of protective equipment and adequate ventilation.

Coverage

2.5 – 3.25 m2/ kg for 2 coats @ 150 – 200 micron DFT
